Aishwarya Rai – The Model who went on to become Miss World:
Aishwarya Rai made her first commercial modeling debut with Camlin pencils, while she was studying in 9th grade. Today her impressive ad portfolio includes L'Oréal Paris, DeBeers Diamonds, Pepsi and Coca-Cola and Longines watches for which she was the ambassador since 1999. She was also the Coca Cola Girl for Middle Eastern countries.
While at college Aishwarya Rai began modeling on the side. Later she contested in the Miss India 1994 pageant and lost to Sushmita Sen. Undaunted, she went on to contest for Miss World in the same year and won the title. From here her life took a new turn.
She was soon flooded with modeling endorsements and film offers. But she refused all, still wanting to become an architect. Indian Cinema’s top directors were hell-bent on signing her for their movies. But the inevitable had to happen and there was no escape for Aishwarya Rai.

Thus in 1997 Aishwarya Rai began her celluloid career with Mani Ratnam’s “Iruvar” in Tamil. Later in the same year she acted in Rahul Rawail’s “Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya”, for which she won the Screen’s ‘Most Promising Newcomer’ award.
Aishwarya Rai has given a sterling performance in several movies and won numerous awards for movies like “Jeans” in which she played the dual role of twin sisters. Her performance as Nandini in “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” won her six awards and her special appearance in Aditya Chopra’s “Mohabbatein” won her accolades. Her performance as a rape victim in ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’ won her rave reviews.
In “Devdas”, she played the immortal character, Parvathi, who fails to marry her only childhood friend and lover, ‘Devdas’ and instead marries a 60-year-old widower with a large family. Her performance as Parvathi was amazing and won her seven ‘Best Actress’ awards including Zee Cine Award, Filmfare Award, RACE Award, Sansui Award, Bollywood Award, Screen Award and Screen Jodi No.1 Award with Shahrukh Khan.
Her other films include, “Jodhaa Akbar” with Hrithik Roshan; “Guru”, “Raaste”, “Umrao Jaan”, “Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke” and “Bunty Aur Babli” with Abhishek Bachchan; “Kyun! Ho Gaya Na”, “Khakee”, “Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin” and “Mohabbatein” with Amitabh Bachchan.
Aishwarya Rai had acted opposite almost all the big names in Bollywood, like Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Shahrukh Khan, Govinda, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Aamir Khan, Sunil Shetty, Ajay Devgan, Bobby Deol and one-time ever green romantic hero Rajesh Khanna too. Today she is the highest paid actress in Bollywood.
Such a dedicated actress she is, she even put on weight and gained 20 pounds more to have real feel of the character in a movie "Bride and Prejudice", the Bollywood version of Jane Asuteen's beautiful novel "Pride and Prejudice." Such dedication paid off and took her to the heights of glory in the history of Indian Cinema. "Bride and Prejudice" was directed by a British director Gurinder Chadha. Her another English movie “Mistress of Spices” directed by Berges was released in UK in April 2006.
